Thinking of Others

Treat the earth well.

It was not give to you by your parents,

It was loaned to you by your children.

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors,

We borrow it from our children.

Often, I am not thinking or being very sensitive to the next generation. I think about "I." I pay for the gasoline, utility costs, stuff - electronics, furniture, etc.,etc. - and don't usually think beyond my financial costs. If I can afford (responsible spender - is there such an "animal?") what I want to purchase then I do. I am much more conditioned to deal with immediate needs or wants and not able to see the long-term ramifications of my meager lifestyle changes.

Someone notes that we are guests only on this planet, not its owners. Therefore we should act as any good guests would act in someone else's home. Or, as the stewards/managers of all we have been given by God we need to care for the creation responsibly.

We all fall short of managing well. Our home may be too big for our needs, we may want the house warmer in the winter or cooler in the summer, we use plastic bags or drive a vehicle that gobbles gasoline, we recycle some things, but not all we could, we don't use cfl's because .... Yes, we all fail to do everything we could to place less strain on the environment. But we can all do something! And, hopefully, others are encouraged to act.

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.
